Affidavit

A written statement of facts that a person confirms to be true, usually in the manner required by law or before an authorised officer.

Bail

Release of a person from custody subject to conditions and an undertaking to appear or comply with the court requirements.

Cause List

A court published list of matters scheduled to be taken up on a particular day or before a particular bench.

Cognizance

The stage at which a court applies its mind to an alleged offence for the purpose of proceeding under the applicable law.

Decree

The formal expression of an adjudication that conclusively determines the rights of parties in a civil suit.

FIR

First Information Report: the record made by police when information relating to a cognisable offence is received, subject to applicable procedure.

Injunction

A court order directing a person to do something or to refrain from doing something. Its scope and conditions depend on the order.

Jurisdiction

The legal authority of a court or forum to hear, decide or grant relief in a particular type of matter.

Limitation

The legally prescribed period within which a proceeding or application generally must be filed, subject to the applicable statute and exceptions.

Mediation

A facilitated process in which a neutral mediator helps parties explore a voluntary settlement; the mediator does not decide the dispute.

Mutation

An entry or change in a revenue or land record after a transaction or succession. Mutation by itself is not always proof of title.

Partition

The division of jointly held property or interests so that co-owners receive separate shares, by agreement or through a legal process.

Plaint

The pleading by which a civil suit is instituted, setting out the material facts, relief claimed and other required particulars.

Summons

A formal direction requiring a person to appear before a court or authority, or to respond to a proceeding, on the stated date and terms.

Writ

A formal order or direction issued by a constitutional court to protect legal rights or control public power within its jurisdiction.
