Can your name be removed from the voters list?Legal Awareness

Can your name be removed from the voters list?

Yes — but not arbitrarily. Section 22 safeguards the deletion process and requires a reasonable opportunity to be heard in key situations.

Short answer: Yes — but not arbitrarily. Section 22 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 permits deletion after proper verification where the elector is dead, has ceased to be ordinarily resident in the constituency, or is otherwise not entitled to be registered. In the latter two situations, a reasonable opportunity to be heard is required. What you can do: 1. Check your entry on the ECI Voters’ Services Portal. 2. Respond to a notice with your explanation and supporting proof. 3. If wrongly deleted, seek restoration through Form 6 and the Section 24 appeal route. Sources: 1.
